Staffing Policy

At Tiwi College, our aim is to provide outstanding holistic education and care for the young Tiwi. For this reason we have made a decision to have a relatively low staff to student ratio, allowing close and intensive tuition at all times.

We have recently employed more Tiwi staff to assist our Academic & FGH staff, to help resolve issues, act as role models for the students and to help as Liaison Officers for the College.

Staffing

Currently we have the following staffing structure:
1 Principal
2 Assistant Principals
1 Primary Teacher
4 Secondary Teachers
2 Quicksmart Assistants – part time
12 Family Group Home Parents
1 Family Group Home Coordinator / Counsellour
1 Family Group Home Administration Officer
1 Hospitality Manager
1 Hospitality Assistant / Cleaner
1 Groundsman
1 Operations Manager
1 Maintenance Assistant
1 Fleet Manager
5 Tiwi Assistant Teachers
1 Tiwi Liaison Manager
1 Tiwi Boys Academy Coordinator
1 Tiwi Girls Academy Coordinator
2 Tiwi Academy Assistants

Staff: Student Ratio

As Tiwi College is such a young school, its brief history shows a high turnover of students. This is considered a norm in areas of Indigenous populations, with family connections and responsibilities spread across the Top End.

However, our retention rate has improved considerably since the school’s inception. Thus, we try to maintain a staff to student ratio of 1:20 as a maximum.

There are times such as the beginning of the semesters when staff need to be flexible for a short period of time, as parents request students to attend a school but this does not always come to fruition.

FGH population:

Due to the same reasoning as above, we cannot always place a staff to student ratio for the Family Group Homes.

However, experience has taught us that a workable maximum for a Home is 12 – with periods when this may be 14.

Implementation

The Tiwi Education Board value our staff and believe in the retention of quality staff as a high priority. Thus as much as possible, we provide incentives and a salary structure that matches NTDET and in other ways, provides greater intrinsic and extrinsic value for all staff.

The well-being of staff is important to us. We have a social club run by staff, providing a range of activities in which all staff to partake and feel welcome.

The following are the current incentives offered by the Tiwi Education Board for its employees:
(a) Relocation Entitlements
(b) Free Accommodation
(c) Free Phone and Internet use
(d) Free Food Freight
(e) 4 x Free Return Flights ( Pickataramoor – Darwin – Pickataramoor ) at the start & end of each term
(f) Subsidized Plane Travel Entitlements of a weekend
(g) Use of College Vehicle Entitlements
(h) Immunisation and Health Care Entitlements
(i) Social Club Entitlements
