As part of the Junior Ranger program, Sonu Yadav from Biosecurity and Animal Welfare, NT Dept of Agriculture and Fisheries will be running workshops for Tiwi senior students in Term 1 called Introduction to Biosecurity, Molecular Biology and Science career pathways.
The goal is to promote STEM career pathways and engage students living in remote areas in fundamental concepts of molecular biology and biosecurity.
The 2-hour workshop includes:
• Practical activities such as insect trapping and microscopy.
• Hands-on demonstration of DNA extraction from insects, practice loading dye into agarose gel and gel electrophoresis to visualize the DNA
• A short presentation on molecular biology, biosecurity, STEM career pathway, and how DNA-based studies can provide information on species' identification.
