Ants and other insects

Tiwi Junior Rangers have been looking at the tiny critters - ants and other insects – that live in the Tiwi bush. Last month at Tiwi College they worked with CDU RIEL - Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods scientists to learn about, collect and identify insects. Insects play a key role in keeping country healthy – and there are lots of them! For example, one hectare of bush is home to many millions of ants, representing 100 or more different species. Students collected insects using sweep nets and pitfall traps and then inspected their catch under microscopes.
